Bunclody, Wexford

Bunclody lies in a lovely location, at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains, bordered by the broad sweep of the Slaney River. As a holiday location the town and accommodation available in the area provide an ideal base for canoeing, fishing, cycling, hill walking, even handgliding. Mount Leinster, 2,610 feet and 11km from Bunclody, is rated one of the best venues for handgliding. If the visitor just wants to get away from it all, relax, have a drink and a chat with the locals, there is a wide variety of pubs to provide ceol agus craic.

What to see and do in Bunclody

6 miles north of Bunclody, representing the achievements of successive generations of the Wilson and North families, are Altamont Gardens, located in Tullow. They are now managed by Duchas – the heritage service. The gardens are a must for visitors in the area.

Fishing in the River Slaney, one of the few Irish rivers with a run of spring salmon commences March 10th to August 31st , while Sea Trout arrive about mid June. A state Licence is required for salmon and sea trout. Daily and weekly permits are available on private and club waters.

Bunclody is also an ideal base for the cyclist with easy access to a range of mountains, rivers, historic and coastal routes. It is also strategically placed for the walker with a mix of long and short walks. General walking information can be provided by contacting Brian Gilsenan on 054-77828.

When in Bunclody, dine at the Chantry Restaurant, which is much more than a mere restaurant, as you will discover.

In July, the streets of Bunclody come alive in the shape of its annual Eileen Aroon festival, which attracts some of the big names in the Irish Music business.
