What to see and do in Wexford Town

Wexford Town is an attractive place with Viking and earlier origins dating back to the 2nd century. The West Gate Tower combines with the ancient and historic Selskar Abbey to be the perfect setting to understand the historical development of Wexford.

Walk along the many interesting narrow laneways, which run steeply from Wexford Main Street, a narrow, winding street where it is possible for two people to shake hands across it at one point. Shops, pubs, restaurants are plentiful in an off Main Street.

Wexford Golf Club is an 18 hole, 5734 yards, Par 72, parkland golf course, enjoyable for its panoramic and stunning views of Wexford Town and Harbour, Rosslare and Rosslare Harbour, with Forth Mountain, the Blackstairs and Wicklow Mountains in the background.

5 miles from Wexford Town in the heart of spectacular forest and mountain country, Shelmalier Riding Stables provide scenic horse riding through 3000 acres of woodland

Entertainments in the town includes the world famous Festival Opera in October with many seasonal festivals during the summer months. Lively pubs, hotels, and bars often provide quality, live entertainment most evenings.

On the outskirts of Wexford Town, the Irish National Heritage Park, which is fittingly, described as the flagship exhibition in the South East traces the journey from man’s first settlements in Ireland up to the arrival of the Norman’s in the 12th century.

Other top visitor attractions in the area

*North of the town, bird watching at North Slobs at Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. As many as 10,000 (1/3 of the world’s total population) of Greenland, white fronted geese winter here.

*7 km south-west of Wexford, Johnstown Castle Estate & Gardens (19th century gothic mansion), also home to the Irish Agricultural Museum and Famine Exhibition.
