Things to do in County Kilkenny

Kilkenny has a pasture rich countryside, gently flowing rivers and quaint little villages dotted along the Nore and Barrow valleys. It’s a popular destination for fishermen, golfers, hikers and walkers who take the beautiful South Leinster Way walk through the county. Here we take a glimpse some other fun activities you can get up to while in Kilkenny.

Horse Racing

A day at the races is always a great day out! When in Kilkenny head for Gowran Park – a horse racing course located in the little village of Gowran just 13km east of Kilkenny city. This picturesque course is located on Lord Annely Estate and it hosts 16 national hunt and flat races throughout the year. Gowran Park also features a superb Rooftop Restaurant, a self service food area and of course plenty of betting facilities.

Golfing

For golfing in Kilkenny, we recommend you head for the Castlecomer Golf Club – a 200 year old golf course located in Castlecomer in Kilkenny. This top class 18 hole golf course can be played all year round in all weather condition as the sand based fairways are irrigated. You are assured a truly unique golfing experience at Castlecomer as its layout and views of the surrounding country side is quite impressive. The course was designed by well know golf course designer Pat Ruddy. The course is just 13 miles from Kilkenny city.

Go Karting

For an exciting and fun day out why not head go-karting? Kiltorcan Raceway Karting Circuit is located approx 20km south of Kilkenny city in Ballyhale. It caters for all ages and levels of driver and boasts a floodlit, all weather 1000 track. It’s a fantastic day out for a group and practice sessions can also be arranged.

You cannot visit Kilkenny and not be enthralled by the county’s passion for hurling. It’s one of the oldest sports in Ireland and one of the fastest games in the world! Kilkenny has won the All-Ireland Hurling Championship a record of 32 times so people of all ages, speak, breath and live hurling in this county. While you’re here try to catch a game at one of the local GAA grounds. Visit the Kilkenny GAA website to check out local fixtures.
