Tipperary Town, Tipperary

Sited on the beautiful River Ara in the heart of the ‘Golden Vale’ is the town of Tipperary, a dairy-farming centre that began as an Anglo-Norman settlement at the end of the 12th century. John O’ Leary the Fenian leader, was born here, as was Charles Kickham, the novelist, another Fenian who has had a bronze statue erected to him in the town. Towards the end of the 19th century Tipperary took an active part in the Land League movement. In 1889, following an increase in rents by a local landlord, his tenants rebelled and assisted by other tenants from all over Ireland who gave their services free for a week, New Tipperary was constructed, but the scheme was later abandoned. Muintir na Tíre, an organised movement to promote all aspects of rural life, was founded here in 1931. It has had a major impact on farming communities throughout Ireland.

We invite you to discover the beauty of the nearby Galtee Mountains, Ireland’s highest inland mountain range and the breathtaking scenery in the Glen of Aherlow south of Tipperary Town which sits snugly between the Galtee Mountains on the south and the Slievenamuck Ridge on the North. A warm welcome awaits you there. Each year, the Glen of Aherlow Society organises a Walking Festival which takes place during the month of April.
